As an esthetician, I'm glad to see that men are becoming more interested in skincare and realizing the importance of taking care of their skin. The stigma of skincare being “girly” is mostly gone now, and I want to empower men to take care of their skin by providing products that work.
Skincare isn't limited to any specific gender, and men can benefit from establishing a skincare routine tailored to their unique needs to keep their skin in shape and looking good well into their late years. Here are my skincare tips for Men:
Just like women, men should cleanse their skin daily to remove dirt, oil, and impurities. Choose a cleanser suitable for your skin type, whether it's dry, oily, or combination. Cleansing helps maintain skin health and prepares it for other skincare products.
If you shave regularly, it's crucial to do so with proper technique and products. Use a high-quality shaving cream or gel to lubricate the skin and minimize irritation. Consider using a sharp razor and shaving in the direction of hair growth to reduce the risk of ingrown hairs.
Moisturizing is essential for all skin types. Opt for a moisturizer specifically designed for men, which is often lightweight and non-greasy. Moisturizing helps hydrate the skin, maintain its natural barrier, and prevent dryness and premature aging.
Men should also prioritize sun protection. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and apply it generously to all exposed areas of the skin, including the face, neck, and ears. Sunscreen helps prevent sunburn, premature aging, and reduces the risk of skin cancer.
Regular exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells and promotes a smoother, more refined complexion. Consider using a facial scrub or exfoliating cleanser once or twice a week, depending on your skin's sensitivity. Exfoliation can also help prevent ingrown hairs.
The delicate skin around the eyes can benefit from targeted care. Use an eye cream or gel specifically formulated for men to address concerns such as dark circles, puffiness, or fine lines. Apply it gently using your ring finger to help prevent tugging on the sensitive skin.
HYDRATION & NUTRITION
Good skin health starts from within. Stay hydrated by drinking enough water throughout the day, as it helps flush out toxins and keeps the skin hydrated. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins also supports overall skin health.
Consider visiting a professional esthetician for specialized treatments that can address specific skin concerns, such as facials, chemical peels, or microdermabrasion. A professional can provide tailored advice and recommend treatments that suit your skin's needs.
