WHAT IS EFAD?

WHAT IS EFAD?

The full significance of EFAD (essential fatty acid deficiency) has not yet been determined. What we do know is that when it comes to skin, essential fatty acid deficiency could result in dry and scaly skin as well as hair loss.

Lack of lipids in the skin barrier is known to cause TEWL (transepidermal water loss), which reflects in reddish, blotchy, irritated, and sometimes flaky skin. Acne could also be associated with EFAD.

Because our bodies do not produce EFAs, qualified health and skin care professional will recommend keeping on top of your EFA levels. EFAs are supplied through our diet with foods such as fish, nuts, and vegetable oils. EFA supplements (vegan options are available as well) are known to help skin oil to become more viscous and less sticky, which helps to reduce pore congestion. Even some types of acne are resolved this way.

But do not cheat with barrier creams. Barrier creams will help with cutaneous homeostasis (our natural skin renewal process), but you still need to do your part in ensuring that you are not deficient in EFAs.

In the end, EFAD will result in poor quantity and quality of ceramides in the skin (dermis), causing lipids to accumulate into small balls contributing to the formation of milia. Support your EFA levels through a well balanced diet.
