Old or unsuitable products can disrupt the skin barrier. Learn how to declutter your skincare shelf, eliminate irritants, and reset your routine for healthier skin.

How Seasonal Changes Affect Pigmentation Reading SPRING CLEAN YOUR SKINCARE SHELF 4 minutes Next SUMMER ACNE BREAKOUTS

Just as you declutter your home each spring, your skincare collection deserves the same attention. Over time, products expire, formulas change, and routines become unnecessarily complicated. Spring is the perfect opportunity to simplify your regimen, remove products that no longer serve your skin, and transition away from heavy winter textures.

A seasonal skincare review isn't about buying more products. It's about using the right products, in the right order, for your skin's current needs. Here are a few ways to refresh your skincare routine this spring.

1. Discard Expired and Unused Products

Begin by checking expiration dates and the Period After Opening (PAO) symbol on your product labels. If a product has changed color, texture, or smell, it's time to let it go. Spring is also a good opportunity to part with products you purchased with good intentions but never actually use. A streamlined skincare routine is easier to follow and often delivers better results.

2. Eliminate Duplicate Products

Many people accumulate multiple products that perform the same function. You don't need three moisturizers, four exfoliants, or several serums with nearly identical ingredients. Keeping only the products that truly earn a place in your routine makes skincare simpler, more consistent, and more effective.

3. Replace Heavy Winter Textures

As temperatures begin to rise, rich creams and highly occlusive products may no longer feel comfortable on the skin. Switching to lighter, breathable formulations can help maintain hydration without leaving the skin feeling heavy. This is particularly important for acne-prone skin or anyone who is prone to congestion, where excess occlusion can contribute to clogged pores.

As the weather becomes hotter and more humid, your skin may require additional adjustments. I cover this in detail in my article, How to Take Care of Problem Skin in Hot, Humid Weather.

4. Make Time for Corrective Treatments

Spring is often the last ideal season for more intensive corrective treatments before the strongest summer sun arrives. If you're addressing concerns such as hyperpigmentation, acne scarring, or uneven texture, this is a good time to schedule professional treatments or begin a targeted home-care program before prolonged UV exposure limits your options.

If breakouts continue despite using appropriate skincare, the cause may not be your products alone. I discuss many overlooked triggers in my article,  Why Most Acne Treatments Fail: Hidden Triggers for Adult Acne

5. Let Your Skin Guide You

Your skin's needs change throughout the year. I call this "Skintuition" - learning to recognize what your skin is telling you. If your skin becomes irritated, congested, or unexpectedly dry, don't automatically assume you need more products. The key is to identify the trigger and implement the right solution to balance your skin barrier, rather than randomly adding products in the hope that something will work. When in doubt, ask your esthetician. An experienced professional can help identify the underlying cause and recommend changes that are appropriate for your skin rather than relying on trial and error.

Final Thoughts

Spring is an opportunity to reset, not only your skincare shelf, but your approach to skincare. A thoughtful routine built around products you actually use will almost always outperform an overcrowded collection. Sometimes the best skincare decision isn't adding another product; it's knowing which ones to let go.
