If your skin ever feels tight, flaky, or dull - you're likely experiencing dehydration. Proper hydration is fundamental to skin health. Hydrated skin maintains its barrier more effectively, sheds dead skin cells normally, remains flexible and resilient, ages slower and maintains a balanced microbiome. Generally, hydrated skin is functioning better, and is less prone to tightness and irritation.
In this article, we break down the science of skin hydration, why it matters at every age, and how to restore and maintain it for long-term results.
Dehydration is a skin condition, not a skin type
Dehydration simply means that the skin is lacking water, and it can happen whether your skin is naturally dry, oily, combination, sensitive, or acne-prone.
Oily skin is often dehydrated because of the common misconception that it doesn't need hydration or moisturizer. As a result, the skin may feel tight or uncomfortable while continuing to produce plenty of sebum. This is why we often see oily skin that looks shiny yet feels tight, appears red, and is easily irritated
Dehydration can also come and go depending on weather, travel, sun exposure, medication, over-cleansing, exfoliation, or the products you are using. This is why I look at dehydration separately from skin type when evaluating what the skin needs.
Understanding the difference makes it much easier to give your skin what it actually needs.
Why Your Skin Needs Water
That water is not there simply to make skin look plump. Skin is our largest outer organ and our first line of defense against the outside world. It protects the body from environmental irritants, microorganisms, chemicals, physical stress and excessive water loss. Adequate water in the outer layers helps the skin maintain the flexibility, enzymatic activity, proper shedding of dead skin cells and integrity of the skin barrier.
When too much water is lost, the outer skin becomes less flexible and can feel rough, tight, sensitive and irritated.
Most of the water that hydrates the skin comes from inside the body, not from water applied to its surface. Water moves from the deeper, more water-rich layers of the skin toward the surface, eventually reaching the stratum corneum, the outermost layer. As it moves outward, some water is naturally lost to the environment through a process known as transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
The stratum corneum helps regulate how quickly that water escapes. Natural moisturizing factors (NMF) within the skin bind water, while the lipids surrounding the skin cells help slow its evaporation. Together, they maintain the water level the outer skin needs to function normally.
How Can You Tell if Your Skin Is Dehydrated?
Dehydrated skin doesn't look exactly the same on everyone, but there are some common signs:

Tightness, particularly after cleansing

Fine superficial lines that become more noticeable

Dull or tired-looking skin

Increased sensitivity

Roughness or lack of suppleness

Skin that feels oily and tight at the same time

Makeup settling differently or emphasizing fine lines
I look at these signs together rather than relying on one symptom.
What Causes Skin Dehydration?
Skin is constantly losing water to the surrounding environment. When that loss exceeds the skin's ability to maintain adequate hydration, dehydration can occur.
Weather is a major factor. Cold temperatures, dry heat, wind, air conditioning and indoor heating can all contribute to water loss.
Sun exposure can also leave skin dehydrated, which is one reason skin often feels different after a beach vacation or prolonged time outdoors.
Then there is what we do to our own skin.
Over-cleansing, frequent exfoliation, strong acids, retinoids, certain medications and using too many active products at once can disrupt the skin barrier and increase water loss.
Sometimes the problem isn't that the skin needs another active ingredient. It needs a simpler routine and a chance to recover.
Hydration and the Skin Barrier
Hydration and barrier function are closely connected.
The skin barrier helps limit excessive water loss while protecting the skin from the outside environment. When that barrier is compromised, water can escape more easily.
At the same time, simply adding water-binding ingredients isn't always enough. Depending on the skin, we may also need appropriate lipids and emollients to help support the barrier and retain moisture.
This is why I don't treat every dehydrated client exactly the same way.
How I Approach Dehydrated Skin
The first thing I look at is why the skin is dehydrated.
Has the client been exfoliating too aggressively? Using a cleanser that is too stripping? Traveling? Spending time in a dry climate? Using retinoids or acids? Using medications that cause skin dryness? Has the weather changed?
Once you identify what is contributing to the problem, the routine becomes much easier to adjust.
Start With Cleansing
Cleansing should remove what needs to be removed without leaving the skin feeling stripped.
If your face feels extremely tight immediately after cleansing, pay attention to that. Your cleanser or cleansing routine may be too aggressive for your skin, or you are very dehydrated and need to offset the dehydration.
Replenish Hydration
After cleansing, I like to bring water back to the skin with a hydrating toner. Hydrating Toner provides an immediate layer of lightweight hydration and can also be misted onto the skin throughout the day when it feels dry or tight.
This is particularly useful in dry climates, heated or air-conditioned environments, during travel, or anytime the skin is losing more water than usual.

Add Water-Binding Ingredients
Humectants help attract and retain water in the skin.
Hyaluronic acid is probably the best-known example, but it isn't the only one. Glycerin, certain sugars and sugar-derived compounds, amino acids, urea, and components of the skin's natural moisturizing factor (NMF) all help bind water and maintain hydration in the outer layers of the skin.
For someone who specifically needs additional hydration, I often recommend Hyaluronic Acid Serum.

Follow With the Right Moisturizer
A hydrating serum doesn't necessarily replace moisturizer. After adding hydration, the appropriate moisturizer helps maintain it while providing the emollients and lipids your skin needs.
For lighter everyday hydration, Daily Moisturizer may be enough. Adjust Hydration When Your Skin Needs It
Your skin's hydration needs change with weather, travel, sun exposure, indoor heating and air conditioning, treatments, medications and the active ingredients you are using. A routine that works perfectly during a humid summer may not provide enough hydration during winter or after a long flight.
Pay attention to these changes rather than following exactly the same routine year-round. If your skin suddenly feels tight, sensitive or uncomfortable, dehydration may be part of the problem.
