HOW TO TREAT SENSITIVE SKIN: EXPERT TIPS FOR CALM, HEALTHY SKIN

Sensitive skin is often a sign of barrier impairment. Learn how to calm irritation, reduce reactivity, and strengthen sensitive skin.

WHAT EXACTLY IS "SENSITIVE SKIN'?

Sensitive skin definition is the compromised skin barrier (and microbiome)  - it feels like everything irritates the skin because the barrier and microbiome functions are not working properly.

When questioned, many people believe they have sensitive skin, with the majority claiming their skin is more sensitive now than just a few years ago.  They describe their skin as “dry, red, rashy, stinging and itchy”, but these sensations are often a symptom of other conditions that are causing the skin sensitivity, such as genetic factors, a lifestyle of exposure to severe environmental factors (heat, sun, cold), weakened immunity, skin injuries, allergic contact dermatitis, eczema, rosacea, where the skin barrier no longer protects nerve endings, leading to skin reactions.

TIPS FOR SOOTHING SENSITIVE SKIN

Avoid taking long showers or baths and use warm, not hot water. Pat your skin dry gently and immediately complete your skincare routine with a nourishing moisturizer and body lotion.

Avoid exfoliants and highly alkaline soaps.  Test products before using them on your inner elbow area for at least 12 hours before applying them on a larger skin area. Keep in mind that the “hypoallergenic” term is not regulated by FDA and that it is not possible to absolutely prevent skin reactions, so these products are not necessarily safer.

Use sensitive skin laundry detergent, along with sensitive skin razors to prevent irritation and rashes.

Practice safe sun exposure and use mineral sunscreen of a minimum of 30 SPF.  Wear loose or comfortably fitting clothing made of soft and absorbing fabrics such as cotton, silk, linen, or rayon clothing.

Most often people experience sensitive skin around the eyes, sensitive skin during pregnancy, when using certain medications and illnesses (sensitive skin after COVID).  This is the time to look into what causes skin sensitivity and seek sensitive skin products.
