Many people assume that moisturizers need to feel rich, heavy, or deeply occlusive to be effective. In reality, healthy skin often responds best to hydration and moisture delivered in balance. In the treatment room, I frequently see clients struggling not because they are using too little skincare, but because they are using products that are not appropriate for their skin's actual needs.

In the treatment room, I frequently see clients whose skin feels congested, uncomfortable, or overwhelmed simply because they are using products that are too heavy for their skin's needs. Others avoid moisturizer altogether, fearing breakouts or excess oil. Both approaches can create unnecessary challenges for the skin.

Daily Moisturizer was developed to provide intelligent hydration and lightweight moisture without leaving the skin feeling greasy or weighed down. The formula helps maintain hydration while supporting a comfortable, breathable finish, making it suitable for a wide range of skin types and routines.

Whether your skin is oily, combination, normal, or acne-prone, the goal remains the same: support healthy skin function with hydration and moisture that feel balanced, comfortable, and sustainable for everyday use.

WHY SO MANY PEOPLE ARE AFRAID OF MOISTURIZER

For years, people with oily or acne-prone skin were told to dry out their skin to control breakouts. Harsh cleansers, alcohol-based toners, and aggressive medicated treatments often left the skin stripped, irritated, and uncomfortable.

When the skin becomes dehydrated, it may respond by producing more oil. This creates a frustrating cycle where skin feels both oily and dry at the same time. Many people mistake dehydration for excess oil and continue using products that further stress the skin.

In my experience, healthy skin is rarely achieved through deprivation. It is achieved through balance.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN SKIN BECOMES DEHYDRATED

One of the biggest misconceptions in skincare is that dehydration only affects dry skin. In reality, dehydration can affect virtually every skin type.

Some of the most dehydrated skin I see in the treatment room is also producing excess oil. This often surprises clients because they assume oily skin cannot be dehydrated. Hydration and oil production, however, are not the same thing.

When skin lacks adequate hydration, it may feel tight, uncomfortable, reactive, congested, or irritated. It may become less resilient and less able to comfortably tolerate active ingredients such as retinoids, exfoliating acids, and acne treatments.

Common signs of dehydration include:

  • Tightness after cleansing

  • Increased oil production

  • Dullness and rough texture

  • Sensitivity to active ingredients

  • Persistent congestion

  • Skin that feels uncomfortable throughout the day

Supporting hydration is one of the simplest ways to help skin function more comfortably and efficiently.

WHY HEAVY MOISTURIZERS DO NOT WORK FOR EVERYONE

One of the biggest mistakes I see is using a moisturizer that is simply too heavy for the skin's needs.

Many rich creams are excellent for dry, depleted, or mature skin. However, oily, combination, and congestion-prone skin often perform better with lighter textures that provide hydration without feeling overly occlusive.

In the treatment room, I find that people often assume more moisture is always better. In reality, skin performs best when it receives the level of hydration and moisture it actually needs.

Too little support can leave skin dehydrated and reactive. Too much can leave it feeling congested, uncomfortable, and overwhelmed.

A moisturizer should support the skin, not overwhelm it.

THE TRUTH ABOUT MOISTURIZERS FOR ACNE-PRONE SKIN

One of the most common misconceptions I encounter is the belief that moisturizer causes breakouts.

Many clients arrive in the treatment room with skin that feels tight, dehydrated, irritated, and congested because they have been trying to control acne by minimizing or eliminating moisturizer. Acne is frequently viewed as an oil problem, which leads many people to avoid moisturizer altogether or rely exclusively on hydrating serums. While hydrating serums can help attract water to the skin, they are boosters, not substitutes for a well-formulated moisturizer. In my experience, this approach often leaves the skin less comfortable, less resilient, and more difficult to manage.

The reality is that acne-prone skin still needs hydration. In fact, some individuals find that their skin becomes more reactive and less comfortable when moisture is consistently withheld. Read more in our blog about why most acne treatments fail.

The goal is not to avoid moisturizer. The goal is to choose one that hydrates without overwhelming the skin.

This is why lightweight, acne-safe moisturizers are often a better choice than rich, heavy creams for individuals prone to congestion.

WHAT I LOOK FOR IN A MOISTURIZER

When evaluating a moisturizer, I am not looking for the richest formula or the longest ingredient list. I am looking for balance.

A well-formulated moisturizer should help the skin attract, retain, and maintain hydration while supporting comfort throughout the day. It should provide enough moisture to keep the skin feeling supple and comfortable without creating unnecessary heaviness.

I typically look for a thoughtful combination of humectants, which help attract water to the skin, and emollients, which help maintain softness and reduce moisture loss. Just as importantly, the texture should layer well with treatment products and feel comfortable enough for consistent daily use.

In my experience, the best moisturizer is not necessarily the most expensive or the richest. It is the one your skin can comfortably use every day while remaining balanced, hydrated, and supported.

Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL)

Healthy skin continuously loses small amounts of water through a natural process known as transepidermal water loss (TEWL). While some water loss is normal, excessive TEWL can leave skin feeling dehydrated, tight, sensitive, and uncomfortable.

Moisturizers help support the skin barrier and improve moisture retention, making it easier for the skin to hold onto hydration throughout the day. This is particularly important for skin exposed to environmental stressors, over-exfoliation, active ingredients, or seasonal changes.

WHO SHOULD USE DAILY MOISTURIZER

Daily Moisturizer was designed for individuals who need hydration without heaviness.

It is particularly well suited for:

  • Oily skin

  • Combination skin

  • Normal skin

  • Acne-prone skin

  • Congestion-prone skin

  • Clients using exfoliating acids or retinoids

  • Anyone seeking lightweight daily hydration

The formula provides comfortable moisture while maintaining a breathable feel on the skin.

HOW DAILY MOISTURIZER FITS INTO A COMPLETE SKINCARE ROUTINE

A moisturizer should not work in isolation. It should complement the rest of your skincare routine.

For many clients, I recommend focusing on a simple framework:

Cleanse → Hydrate → Treat → Moisturize

This might include:

  • A cleanser appropriate for your skin type

  • Hydrating Toner

  • Plant Stem Cell Serum with Peptides

  • Daily Moisturizer

This straightforward approach helps support hydration while allowing treatment products to perform more effectively.

WHEN I RECOMMEND ONERTA® CREAM BARRIER INSTEAD

Not every skin type benefits from the same moisturizer.

When skin is severely dry, depleted, compromised, or experiencing significant moisture loss, I often recommend Onerta® Cream Barrier instead.

Onerta® Cream Barrier was developed specifically for dry and compromised skin that requires more intensive support. It provides a richer lipid profile and a more protective feel than Daily Moisturizer.

The choice is not about which product is better. It is about selecting the moisturizer that best matches your skin's current needs.

HOW I USE DAILY MOISTURIZER IN THE TREATMENT ROOM

One of the most common things I hear from clients is, "My skin is oily, so I don't think I need moisturizer."

In reality, some of the most dehydrated skin I see is also producing excess oil.

When skin lacks adequate hydration, it often becomes less comfortable and more reactive. Clients may describe their skin as oily, tight, congested, irritated, or all of the above at the same time.

In these situations, adding a heavy cream is not always the answer. More often, I look for hydration and moisture that support the skin without overwhelming it.

This is where lightweight moisturizers can be particularly beneficial. They help maintain comfort and hydration while allowing the skin to feel balanced and breathable throughout the day.

In my treatment room, I am always trying to match the level of moisture to the skin's actual needs. Too little support can leave the skin feeling dehydrated and stressed. Too much can leave it feeling congested and uncomfortable.

The goal is balance. When hydration and moisture are properly matched to the skin, it tends to look healthier, feel more comfortable, and respond better to the rest of the skincare routine.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

CAN MOISTURIZER CAUSE BREAKOUTS?

A moisturizer that is not appropriate for your skin type may contribute to congestion. However, avoiding moisturizer altogether often creates additional problems, particularly for acne-prone skin.

DO OILY SKIN TYPES NEED MOISTURIZER?

Yes. Oily skin can still become dehydrated. Hydration and oil production are not the same thing.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DAILY MOISTURIZER AND ONERTA® CREAM BARRIER?

Daily Moisturizer is a lightweight formula designed for oily, combination, normal, and acne-prone skin. Onerta® Cream Barrier is a richer moisturizer developed for dry, compromised, and moisture-depleted skin.

FINAL THOUGHTS

In my experience, healthy skin is rarely the result of doing more. It is usually the result of doing the right things consistently.

The best moisturizer is not necessarily the richest or most expensive one. It is the one your skin can comfortably use every day while remaining balanced, hydrated, and supported.

When hydration and moisture are delivered in balance, skin tends to look, feel, and function at its best.
