Over the past few years, micellar water has circulated the skincare world with speculation about its benefits and usages. We wholeheartedly believe and rely on this insider beauty secret, and just like you may have guessed, we are here to answer all of your questions surrounding this must-have product. Read below to demystify!
If you are someone who ritualizes your skincare routine, our micellar water is the perfect addition to your beauty cabinet! If you’re already aware of this product but unsure of the details of what micellar water does for your skin and how to use this cleansing water for your face and body, then tune in. We have some interesting insider secrets to share.
Before we jump into the details, the purpose of using this celebrated product is to help soothe your skin and sweep away impurities, which is why we took our time creating this formula. This waterless cleanser is ideal for nighttime cleansing for normal, dehydrated, and dry skin types, and is an excellent, soothing facial makeup remover. Our micellar water formula is comprised of superior ingredients that work in harmony with cleansing micelles (tiny molecules that grab dirt, oil, makeup, pollution, and debris from the skin) to cleanse all skin types, including combination skin. Clients have reported a more even skin tone, less dryness and irritation, and the thorough makeup removal this product offers, not to mention, the convenience of not having to use water to rinse it off the skin.
To highlight just one of many standout reviews:
“I’ve tried a lot of micellar water products that claim to be marketed as safe for sensitive skin, but every time it would break me out and leave my skin feeling sticky and not fully clean. This micellar water not only removed all of my makeup, but it also hasn't broken out my sensitive skin once! I use this every night to remove my makeup and follow it with the blemish control wash, hydrating toner, and daily moisturizer, and my skin has never been better. I can’t say enough good things about all of Biba’s products!”
Enough about us! Today, we’re outlining everything you need to know about this beauty secret!
What is micellar water?
Starting with the basics, micellar water is a purified solution made of oil particles known as micelles, suspended in “soft” water. Think of these micelles as magnetic molecules with two ends, one that attracts and draws out surface-level dirt, makeup, oil pollutants, and environmental debris, and one that attaches to the water within the solution, and soaks onto a cotton or applicator pad.
Taking our micellar formula to new heights (humble brag), it's formulated with a bio-activated Asian mushroom complex. Just call it magic water, as it removes and reduces the flushed appearance of skin and irritation caused by chemical and physical irritants. It's ideal for nighttime cleansing for normal, dehydrated, and dry skin types. If you’re that person that can’t ever seem to find a solution that works or if you always feel like the products you see are some form of catchy buzz marketing, we hear you! And we have your back.
Trust us (famous last words), you can count on micellar water to keep your skin nourished as these magnetic molecules do not strip away or draw the natural oils out of your skin. Micellar water looks like normal water, yet the magic is found in its touch. While it has the viscosity of normal water, when you apply it onto your fingers, you will notice the water’s soft and dewy texture. Our clients have told us that they have used past formulations that feel sticky to the touch - gross! Our micellar water has an even solution that feels like a gentle bath for your face. Now that's something we can get on board with! Unlike a toner, this revolutionary product does not contain alcohol and will not sting your skin, as it contains no harsh ingredients. History shows that this beauty secret goes back for centuries, originating in France when there was no traditional plumbing and the available water was harsh on the skin. This led to the early beauty adapters creating a gentle, better-textured water to use for facial cleansing.
Sometimes, we still run into these problems today. We all use one main ingredient in our skincare routine: sink water. Did you know that your regular tap water can dry out and irritate your skin? Oftentimes, your tap water contains an excess of minerals, including calcium, magnesium, and potassium, and while these elements may be safe for drinking, they can often cause skin dryness and irritations. In some cases, it can even be the cause of dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis. If this rings a bell, you might need our micellar water in your skincare routine.
What are the benefits of micellar water?
Micellar water helps you start the day fresh. It’s like coffee for your face - wiping away yesterday’s mistakes and cleansing all impurities, while hydrating your skin simultaneously. Sign us up! As mentioned before, the science behind the two-sided molecules is the reason this special product can cleanse and moisturize your skin at the same time.
There is an additional ingredient in this skincare product called glycerin, which helps combat dryness and retain moisture. Glycerin is also known for helping to speed up the wound-healing process and protect against irritation. For example, if that tester you tried at Sephora was a no-go, skip your scrub or cleanser made with acids and opt for micellar water until the redness and irritation have subsided.
Micellar cleansing water benefits also include an increase in your skin’s permeability, which allows the additional cleansers you use to reach deeper layers of your skin! Increasing your skin’s permeability also means you enhance the cleansing compounds and effectiveness of the micellar water itself.
Micellar water cleansers are great for all skin types. They are incredibly versatile and well suited for any skin type because they're so gentle. Even our clients with the most sensitive skin have found that this product gets the job done. Dermatologists have also said micellar water has benefits for your body’s skin and for conditions like rosacea. We mean it. This product does it all! This is because micellar water is free from ingredients like soaps and alcohols that are irritating to common sensitivities.
When using micellar water as a makeup remover, you’ll not only remove heavy makeup, but you will also actively avoid blackheads and breakouts from makeup debris. Now, who doesn't like that?! Because this clean and simple product must be applied with a cotton pad, this avoids using your hands, facial brushes, and washcloths that spread germs and bacteria, clog your pores, and make you break out. Before moving on, here’s an expert tip: micellar water doesn’t have the necessary viscosity for mascara removal, so if you are using it to remove mascara, keep your eyes closed! Regardless of how you wash your face, always make sure you wash your hands before starting your skincare routine!
This formula is also great for wiping off sweat after a workout or fixing a makeup mistake! We’ve all applied a little too much eyeliner and thought... now what?! Again, keep your eyelids tightly closed when correcting makeup mistakes. Better yet, use a clean Q-tip dipped in the micellar water for more precise action and no dripping.
Last but not least, our absolute favorite micellar cleansing water benefit is that this power product is portable and convenient. We’re all on the go these days and we need something that keeps up with our busy schedules! This waterless, innovative facial cleanser is an all-in-one makeup remover, cleanser, and semi-toner, and it is unlikely to dry out your skin. You can eliminate the need for additional skincare products when traveling, and reduce shelf clutter in your bathroom. However, when you’re on the move, pour the product out in a small size container to use it on the go with ease.
Does micellar water remove makeup?
If you haven't gotten our point by now, micellar cleansing water is a beneficial product to add to your skincare routine because it is great for removing dirt from the face’s surface. If you apply contouring makeup to your neck, don’t forget that this area is also prone to breakouts! Don’t wait until your next shower to clean this critical skin real estate!
It is important to note that while micellar water is ideal for cleaning your face, we still recommend using a gentle scrub 2-3 times per week, as well as a hydrating mask to penetrate deep into your pores, and soften the dead skin cells to be cleansed out with the rest of the unwanted residue.
The main benefit of using a cleansing water makeup remover is its gentle formula. The micelles in the water solution dissolve the makeup and oil on your skin. If the foundation remains after using the makeup remover cleansing water, it’s best to cleanse with one more wash to ensure you got every last speck of coverup. This makeup remover cleanses the skin gently and thoroughly.
Let's talk about mascara. Micellar water will remove mascara but it is not specifically designed for mascara removal because it does not have the viscosity necessary for sting-free mascara removal. If you desire to use micellar water for mascara removal, make sure to keep the eyelids tightly closed. Waterproof makeup may be more challenging to remove using micellar water. Eye makeup can require stronger formulas.
Can micellar water also be used as a facial cleanser?
Our clients are always so surprised that it is just this simple! Just like the best relationships, an uncomplicated skincare routine is what you should strive for. This cleansing water also addresses uneven skin tones caused by sun damage and clogged pores, (don’t forget to use sunscreen daily!) and it soothes irritated or inflamed skin.
Let’s say you wore an intense face mask at night and wanted to be extra gentle the following day. Micellar water would be an excellent next step here. Our all-in-one product also normalizes reactive skin, reducing skin sensitivity and irritation from chemical and physical irritants, and it refreshes skin with ample hydration. Additionally, if you have a bad reaction caused by a new beauty product, guess what we recommend…
With all of these benefits, the answer to the question is not a simple “yes” or “n0.”
We absolutely say, "YES" to having micellar water in your beauty cabinet and routine (shocker), but if you are coming home from a long night of wearing mascara and heavy foundation, only using the water cleanser will not be as effective as fully washing your face. When you skip your BB cream for some heavy coverage, remember that the thicker the makeup formula is, the harder it is to remove. If you opt for fully covering those sleepy Monday morning eyes, don’t skip out on taking the proper steps to remove dense solutions off of your face.
Just like with any other skincare product, balance is key, and listening to your skin is key too! If your skin could talk, what would it be telling you? Analyze daily and change the plan accordingly.
Do dermatologists recommend Micellar Water?
When using micellar water for your face, it’s important to remember it isn’t an aggressive cleanser, so dermatologists have noted that it may not be well suited for people hoping to treat severe acne. Alternatively, sometimes harsh cleansers may be further irritating to your skin and a more calming approach may be warranted. This is especially true when the skin is adjusting to drying or exfoliating products that are targeting acne.
While experts are in full support of micellar water, they do advise you to use it in addition to your normal cleanser, especially if you have oily skin. Due to its gentle properties, for some skin types, it may only scratch the surface and additional products may be needed to really nail down results. Though we love this miracle product, it’s critical to note that there is no one size fits all solution.
While it's also critical to note that although dermatologists love quality micellar, it’s still important to read the ingredients and make sure there are no harmful additives. Our micellar water contains no formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing chemicals and is non-comedogenic. Additionally, it is also cruelty-free and does not contain SLS, fragrance, parabens, triclosan, essential oils, mineral oil, or oxybenzone. These are all specifics that dermatologists encourage you to look for in any products you use on your skin. Our formula is loaded with skin conditioning, soothing, and hydrating ingredients, and without unhealthy preservation systems.
Micellar water is also oil-free because oil is not needed to form a micelle. We use a unique combination of surfactants that form micelles in the product, which, when applied to the skin, form micelles with oily materials on the skin. The product can then be wiped away, removing the micelles and leaving the skin clean.
Do you have to rinse micellar water after use?
Morning or night, you can use this delicate product in your skincare routine. It is gentle enough to use multiple times a day, unlike deeper and more aggressive cleansers.
After soaking your cotton pad in our magic water, gently wipe it across your face while avoiding scrubbing or pushing deeply into your skin to avoid irritation. Additionally, make sure that you never scrub your eyes! We cannot repeat this enough! This area is extremely delicate and should be lightly padded with the eyes closed. Once your face is cleaned and removed of all eye makeup, there is no need to rinse the product off your skin, regardless of your skin type. Easy, peasy!
You’ll notice that after wiping your face with micellar water, even without a rinse, you will achieve a glowy look and an even skin tone. To take your skincare routine to the next level, we do suggest using a post-cleanser serum and moisturizer to lock in hydration and keep that dewy look throughout your day.
We’ve given you an ear-full, so let’s break it down. Micellar water is a gentle formula that can be used as a cleanser, and it also removes makeup. Unlike your tap water, this product has a dewy texture and lacks the harsh minerals that are often found in tap water. While disposable wipes leave debris residue on the skin, micellar water penetrates on a deeper level, cleaning away makeup that is left behind. Plus, micellar water is a more sustainable solution! Get this, there are 20 million makeup wipes per day that are tossed into the trash…. that is 7.6 billion that are thrown away into the landfill each and every year. If this isn't a swaying point, we don't know what is!
For the average person, micellar water can stand in place of a cleanser, but for those who have inflamed acne or wear extra makeup, it’s advised that you include another step in your routine. We recommend including a scrub 2-3 times a week (try our Mandelic Scrub) and applying a mask 3 times per week as well (try our Calming Zinc Sulphur Mask). Your skincare routine doesn't need to be a daily 5 step regimen. Simplify and your optimal skin texture will return the love!
